Sciurius Life (NAT/UK/000467): New National Squirrel Project Launch

EU Life 14 project launched which will evolve grey squirrel management techniques in Europe

Red Squirrels Trust Wales (RSTW) are very proud to be participants in a new and exciting Heritage Lottery & EU funded (NAT/UK/000467) project. The ‘Sciurius Life’ project will empower local communities to become actively involved in regional red squirrel conservation and control of the invasive grey squirrel.

In north Wales, RSTW will attempt to eradicate grey squirrels from 165 square kilometres of lowland woodland and mountain valley habitats in Gwynedd. This initiative will prevent grey squirrels from recolonizing Anglesey and will create opportunities for the small mainland red squirrel population to spread.

In partnership with Natural Resources Wales, RSTW will also be employing a contractor to co-ordinate volunteers in and around Clocaenog forest in Clwyd. The forest is home to a nationally important red squirrel population but is vulnerable to invasion by grey squirrels.
