Red Squirrels Trust Wales have made an official complaint to Natural Resources Wales (NRW) regarding felling of woodland habitat containing a high density red squirrel population at the height of the breeding season.
There has been significant press coverage of the incident and we are awaiting the result of NRW investigation. We recognise that woodland management and commercial timber production are important and legitimate activity. Red squirrel conservation can easily be integrated into such works through careful timing of felling and sensitive approach to harvesting. In this case, both the woodland owner and NRW were aware of the presence of a high density population and yet the presence of the species was overlooked with the result that clear felling occurred at a time when young squirrels are in dreys.
An update will be posted in due course.
