Education, Guided walks, and red squirrel conservation

Education and community support are at the heart of our efforts to safeguard the Anglesey red squirrels. This page tells parents and teachers how children can get involved and learn more about the endangered red squirrel.

Searching for red squirrels

Each year our education officer, Bethan, organises a range of activities with local school children. Ysgol Carreglefn during a day in the Wern y Wylan woodland looking for red squirrelsFor example, in 2005, Ysgol Carreglefn, Ysgol Talwrn & Ysgol Llandrygarn all visited the Wern y Wylan hazel woodlands and learned about the conservation of red squirrels in hazel stands. They saw some of the special nest boxes that have been erected for the squirrels and also a feeding hopper. No red squirrels were seen, but the children did find evidence of squirrels including the split shells of hazel nuts and some chewed pine cones. The following year, Ysgol Gaerwen, Ysgol Beaumaris and Ysgol Llangafo were amongst several dozen local schools to visit woodland containing red squirrels.

We have also produced a childrens education pack for use by teachers. The pack is in both English and Welsh and contains information about red and grey squirrels and a range of games, puzzles and drawings that can be coloured in - Contact us for further details.

In the meantime why not download our red squirrel fact sheet.
