   CCW - Species Challenge Funding

The Friends receive a CCW Challenge Fund Grant which has allowed us to carry out many events and also to publicise the plight of the endangered red squirrel on Anglesey and across Wales.

  • Nest boxes and supplemental feeding

We have organised numerous evening nest box construction workshops in Menai Bridge. A total of twenty nest boxes were constructed by local people, and these were erected in Newborough forest during the late autumn 2004. The boxes provide safe, dry and attarctive nest sites for the young red squirrels that have been released into the forest during the summer and autumn months. We have also purchased twenty squirrel feeders and a range of different foods that squirrels find atractive. These include hazel nuts, pine nuts, sunflower seed and maize. It is hoped that this food will help the young squirrels to survive in the forest.

  • Red squirrel week 2004

During the 2004 'red squirrel week' we held a wide range of local events. These included the first Wales Red Squirrel Conference, woodland walks, a raffle, garden party, red squirrel 'habitat creation' workshop and several events with local schools.

  • Volunteers, advice and public survey

We have around ten regular volunteers who help with events, publications and monitoring local squirrel populations. This year we also had an online survey asking people to let us know what they thought of government plans to clear-fell large areas of Newborough Forest.

  • Red squirrel Information

We have created a web site with over 40 individual pages which we hope people will find informative. These include feedback and red squirrel sighting forms, a guestbook and contact details so that people can easily get in touch.

Leaflets, newsletters and information bulletins have also been produced to keep the general public and members of the Friends up to date with our work. We have also had stalls at Anglesey Show, Treborth Garden Open Day, Plas Newydd Garden Fete and at other locations on the island.

  • Links with Other Groups

We have regular meetings with CCW, the Anglesey CC Biodiversity Officer and other NGOs. And we look forward to working with partners in the Wales Red Squirrel Forum.
